George Halpin, engineer, was responsible for building this lighthouse tower,
Halpin was well known for the construction of many other lighthouses, such as Bell Rock in the North Sea off the coast of Scotland.
He was a descendant of Robert Louis Stevenson, author of the famous adventure novel, "Treasure Island".
The Youghal lighthouse is constructed of granite imported from Scotland and painted white. The building has three floors standing 15 meters to the top of dome ventilator. It’s walls are more than 1:2 meters thick. The active focal-plane of the Tower is 24 meters ,flashing white or red depending on the distance. Its beacon shines for a distance of 20 miles.
