Kells Augustine Priory is beautifully located on the banks of Kings River in rural county Kilkenny.
This imposing structure, which was founded by Geoffrey Fitzrobert (brother-in-law of Strongbow) has seven tower houses, a high wall said to be more like a fortress than a Priory,. Covering an area of just over 3 acres, it was attacked on three occasions, first by Lord William de Bermingham in 1252, by a Scots Army of Edward Bruceon Palm Sunday in 1326 and also by a second William de Bermingham in1327.The dissolution of the Priory took place in March 1540.The church and property was finally surrendered to James Butler, the 9th Earl of Ormonde.
