Grannagh Castle is located on the northern bank of the river Suir just outside Waterford City.
Its founders were the Earls of Ormond. "In the civil wars Colonel Axtell who was governor of Kilkenny dispatched a party to reduce it, but they returned unsuccessful. Axtell himself then marched out with two cannons and summoned the castle to surrender. Without any hope of relief the garrison submitted.
