Dun Briste - Mayo

Dun Briste - Mayo

Known as “Dun Briste”, this is a spectacular sea-stack which is approximately 50 metres in height. It stands just off Downpatrick Head, in the town-land of Knockaun, east of the quiet village of Ballycastle. The stack is crowned by an old ruined fort.

Here in this exposed area, where land meets the sea, the cliffs were formed in the Lower Carboniferous period, which is c. 350 million years ago.

On Downpatrick headland, several archaeological monuments can be seen. These include Bronze-Age ring-barrows, early ecclesiastical sites and the remains of a promontory fort.
