A well known landmark of western Ireland, Croagh Patrick is a sacred mountain and place of pilgrimage.
Continuing a 1500 year old tradition, as many as 1 million pilgrims annually make the arduous trek to the summit to pray at the stations of the cross and attend mass in honour of St. Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint who fasted for forty days on the mountain top.
As penance, many pilgrims make the climb of 762 metres barefoot.
