Burncourt Castle was built by Sir Richard Everard in 1641 and burned by Cromwell in 1650 ,hence the name.As Sir Richard was Hanged the following year,,it has remained ruined ever since,,,,it has 26 Gables and 7 Chimney stacks. There are some conflicting stories as to who was responsible for burning the castle,,,it is stated Sir Richard Everard went to Kilkenny in 1642 and joined the Catholic Confederates and became a member of the Supreme Council,,Lady Catherine his wife remained at the Castle,,,,then it is stated that in 1649 as Oliver Cromwell's troops advanced on the Castle that Lady Catherine deliberately set fire to her Fortress to prevent it falling into the Enemies' hands,,Everard's Castle burnt to the ground and later became known as Burntcourt / Burncourt,,Sir Richard went to help defend the city of Limerick against Cromwell's Forces but was captured and Hung by Cromwell's son-in law General Ireton in 1651,,,,,,,The Castle had also been known as Clogheen Castle and Everard's Castle!
