Anthassel Abbey near the village of Golden in County Tipperary is the biggest Medieval Priory in Ireland.
It is a testament to the Augustinians who built it, covering an area of 4 acres on the banks of the river Suir. It was founded by William Fitz-Aldhelm de Burgho in the 12th century. The Monastery was dissolved at the beginning of the 16th century.
Today, it’s a very large but impressive ruin and an unexpected wonderland of broken walls ancient tombs, empty rooms and spiral staircases.
