#1, Ned Curran's Cottage & Part of Homestead,Coum Tay Valley,Comeragh Mountains.

This is the famous Cottage and Homestead of Ned Curran in the Coum Tay Valley,,when lived in it was miles away from any neighbours and miles more from the nearest shop, which was at Mahon Bridge to get any provisions he would have to travel through the rugged valley and cut across more rigorous foot - hills,,my guess about 8 miles,,life in those days must have been very hard,,to eke out a living,,,although he had a good plot of land and outhouses, perhaps a Cow for milk & butter,,maybe Hens & Cockrels some Pigs & of course Sheep & maybe some Ducks,Geese &Turkeys,,really I suppose he was self-sufficient in a lot of ways,,,no Electricity then, probably Parrafin Lamps & Candles,,an open fire to cook the meals, boil water and heating the home,at the best of times the valley is open to winds & weather of all sorts especially Snow,,,My fellow Rambler Martin & myself sat in what would have been the Bedroom we had our first Tea & Sandwich here and had reserves for when we would reach the Lakes in the Coum,,,we couldn't help but try to imagine what life was like then,,although now roofless & derelict,,,we both could get a pleasent feeling of home and a thought hard to explain of a kindness and reverence,,which made us feel relaxed of mind and body in the stillness and quiet only broken by the sounds from the Birds,Sheep & the Easterly winds which carried in the Mists which were intermittent,,This we both enjoyed,,then we had to get back on the lovely trail again,,as we said God be with you Mr.& Mrs.Curran,Amen.
